HAIR – THROUGH THE SOCIAL LENS
Hair II / 2023 / Oil on canvas / 115 x 100 cm
The Egyptian society, deeply influenced by its history and religion, fascinates Carole in the context of modern life, particularly the female head of hair. During the time of the Pharaohs, women wore elaborate hairstyles and used valuable hair accessories to emphasize their status. Today, the role of a woman's hair is multifaceted, touching upon culture, religion, and social identity. In her artistic exploration, Carole portrays it sometimes covered by a headscarf, sometimes obscured by splashes of color. At times, it is unclear whether what is visible is hair or fabric, leaving the interpretation to the viewer. Some of these works were exhibited from November 23 to December 23, 2023, in the international group exhibition Something Else at the Citadel in the historic Citadel of Salah al-Din in Cairo. Local visitors appreciated the perspective of a foreigner on their own culture, and the central theme of her painting, the female head of hair, sparked conversations. Every woman, whether she chooses to wear a headscarf or not, has her own experiences within her family or society.
